Ster-Kinekor, South Africa’s largest film exhibitor, had its biggest “out of season” weekend for admissions in 2025 from May 23-25, demonstrating that cinema remains a powerful draw.
“This once again is proof that cinema is alive and well, and that audiences still prefer watching the new release of a blockbuster title on the big screen. It also proves that movie magic is not regulated by the calendar,” says Mark Sardi, CEO of Ster-Kinekor.
Weekend Box Office Hits
The remake of Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” led the weekend, marking the second-biggest opening of 2025 by attendance, just behind “The Minecraft Movie.” The beloved Hawaiian alien adventure clearly resonated with audiences of all ages.
For action fans, “Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning” delivered the biggest action opening of the year across Ster-Kinekor sites. Tom Cruise’s latest mission, filmed for IMAX, was a major highlight, with Ster-Kinekor capturing an impressive 58% share of its weekend box office. This strong showing reinforces Ster-Kinekor’s position as a key player in the theatrical distribution of action blockbusters.
Looking Ahead: New Developments and Promotions
In other news, Ster-Kinekor will close its Cavendish Square cinema complex in Cape Town on June 12 due to a non-renewal of its lease. However, the company is actively investing in its remaining complexes to enhance the movie-going experience.
Ster-Kinekor’s “Throwback Cinema” promotion, offering older titles for just R50, continues to be popular. The “Epic Deal” promotion for SK Club members (free to join) provides a ticket, regular drink, and popcorn for R149.90, making movies more accessible.
