The Appeals Tribunal has upheld its initial decision to rate the documentary The Showerhead at a lower classification, advising audiences that the film contains strong language and references to sexual violence. This decision overturns the original rating of 16 LNP (SV) and grants the film a rating of 13 L (SV).
The film’s appeal argued that the Film and Publication Board (FPB) lacks the authority to censor political criticism. The cartoons by Zapiro, which are central to the film, are readily accessible online and in print without age restrictions.
Directed by Craig Tanner and produced by Anant Singh, The Showerhead chronicles Zapiro’s journey from political detainee under apartheid to a leading advocate for freedom of expression. The film is set to release in South Africa on Friday, 13 September.
Director Craig Tanner expressed satisfaction with the tribunal’s decision, stating, “It’s both unacceptable and ironic that a film about freedom of expression has faced attempts to limit its audience. The lower rating is a victory for sanity and for allowing South Africans to form their own opinions.”
Zapiro echoed Tanner’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of allowing young people to engage with satirical content and challenging issues. Producer Anant Singh likened the initial rating to apartheid-era censorship and celebrated the decision as a triumph for freedom of expression.
The Showerhead will open on Friday, 13 September at selected cinemas, including the Bioscope in Johannesburg, The Labia in Cape Town, and Movies@ at Monte Casino. Additional screenings are scheduled for Saturday, 14 September and Sunday, 15 September at Rosebank Nouveau and Ster Kinekor V&A.
