Top Gun: Maverick is now available to stream on Showmax. On the website, Top Gun: Maverick now has a 99% audience score from more than 50 000 fans and a 96% rating from over 450 critics.
After winning Best Movie, Best Wide Release Movie, and Best Action & Adventure Movie at Rotten Tomatoes’ Golden Tomato Awards, which honor the best rated movies of the year, it seems Top Gun: Maverick is cruising into awards season. Now nominated for six Oscars in the categories of Motion Picture of the Year, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, Visual Effects, and Sound, as well as Best Song for Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga and BloodPop, it seems on set to rewrite records as the new standard for a sequel and reboot.
Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Oscar candidate Tom Cruise), who has spent more than 30 years serving as one of the navy’s best aviators, is where he belongs, pushing the limits as a fearless test pilot and avoiding the promotion that would ground him.
Maverick meets Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Sundance winner Miles Teller), call sign “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose,” when he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen. Maverick was someone Rooster’s father trusted, but he won’t make the same error again.
Maverick is forced to face his innermost fears as a result of facing an uncertain future and his past demons.
Four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris (Westworld), Emmy winner Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Oscar winner Val Kilmer (Heat), and Monica Barbaro (UnREAL) also star in the film, which also features Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind).
Top Gun: Maverick, which was the second-largest box office success in the world and the biggest in South Africa last year, is one of the top 100 movies of all time on IMDb and has already won more than 60 international accolades. Additionally, outlets as diverse as Complex, The Globe and Mail, IMDb, People, The Telegraph, Total Film, Uproxx, and The Washington Post called it the best movie of 2022.
Similar praises include “as thrilling as blockbusters go” from Independent, “the best studio action movie since 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road” from Daily Telegraph, and “you will want to high five someone on the way out” from Time/Out.
Top Gun: Maverick has been nominated for four 2023 BAFTA awards, including cinematography and special visual effects, the Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble, and a Grammy for its soundtrack. It has also been shortlisted for several Oscars.
The late Tony Scott’s 1980s classic Top Gun, which co-starred Oscar winner Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption), Emmy winners Anthony Edwards (ER) and Tom Skerritt (Alien), multiple award-winning Meg Ryan (When Harry Met Sally), and the late Kelly McGillis, is also available on Showmax (Witness). Take My Breath Away by Giorgio Moroder, the Top Gun Anthem by Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens, and the 1987 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture all went to Top Gun.
