In a move set to reshape the cinematic landscape across Southern Africa, European powerhouse STUDIOCANAL has officially locked in a major, long-term theatrical distribution partnership with Sun Africa Group (SAG).
SAG, a prominent member of the Telefilms Group (owners of Sun Distribution Group), will become the exclusive theatrical home for STUDIOCANAL’s highly anticipated slate of English-language feature films in South Africa. Structured as a robust three-year agreement, the partnership establishes a reliable, high-octane pipeline of international blockbusters, indie gems, and homegrown South African stories designed specifically for the big screen.
The deal underscores STUDIOCANAL’s aggressive expansion strategy into Africa’s most vibrant creative economy, blending global star power with deep-rooted local storytelling.
A Diverse Slate: From Hollywood Heavyweights to Local Legends
The partnership covers an expansive multi-genre portfolio. Audiences can look forward to mainstream animations, premium international dramas and spine-chilling releases from 6th Dimension – STUDIOCANAL’s dedicated genre and horror label. Crucially, the deal also encompasses select South African co-productions developed in tandem by STUDIOCANAL and M-Net, ensuring local narratives receive top-tier theatrical backing.
The Launchpad: ‘Pressure’
Kicking off the partnership is the high-profile, white-knuckle thriller Pressure. Directed by Anthony Maras (Hotel Mumbai), the film boasts a powerhouse ensemble cast including:
- – Andrew Scott (Fleabag, Ripley)
- – Brendan Fraser (The Whale, The Mummy)
- – Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin)
Upcoming Cinematic Highlights
Following Pressure, the three-year pipeline promises a steady stream of highly anticipated auteur and genre filmmaking, including:
- – Danny Boyle’s Ink – The latest visionary project from the Academy Award-winning director.
- – Elsinore & Full Phil – High-concept dramas drawing intense industry buzz.
- – The Custom of the Country – A lavish, gripping narrative adaptation.
- – The Mannequin – A psychological horror-thriller from acclaimed genre director Sean Byrne (The Devil’s Candy).
Deepening African Roots: ‘The Road Home’
This landmark deal closely follows STUDIOCANAL’s recent announcement of The Road Home, an upcoming feature helmed by Oscar-winner Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, Chicago) and starring Tony and Emmy-winner Cynthia Erivo.
Cameras are set to roll on the ground in South Africa at the end of June. The film dives deep into a poignant, real-world narrative: the profound creative friendship between South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela and American icon Paul Simon, set against the turbulent backdrop of apartheid-era South Africa.
By anchoring large-scale productions like The Road Home in the region, STUDIOCANAL and its parent company, CANAL+, are solidifying a long-term commitment to nurturing African creative talent and expanding the continent’s theatrical footprint.
A Trusted Alliance Restored
While the scope of this three-year deal is unprecedented, the collaboration rests on a bedrock of mutual trust. SAG and STUDIOCANAL have worked hand-in-hand since SAG’s inception, most recently collaborating on the successful South African theatrical rollout of the romance drama We Live in Time, starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield.
